Most pressure cookers build about the same amount of pressure as a can of vigorously shaken soda. Except pressure cookers operate at much higher temperatures. So imagine that can of soda exploding – but the liquid is over 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dangers of Pressure Cookers
A common problem with pressure cookers occurs when the vent gets clogged. Without the vent to reliably lower the pressure inside the pot, the pressure can rise so high that the lid pops off.
The lid may also fly off during the cooking process if it doesn’t properly lock or if the pressure cooker is opened before being completely de-pressurized.
When a lid pops off under pressure, the force behind it is so strong it can cause property damage. Hot steam and boiling food may explode in every direction.
Pressure cookers can also cause what are called “steam explosions.” When pressurized boiling water is suddenly released, it expands quickly. When this happens in a pressure cooker, it can send hot liquid and sticky food all over anyone standing nearby.

What Do These Lawsuits Claim?
Under U.S. law, all manufacturers have a duty of care to consumers. Their products must meet certain standards that a reasonable person would expect. When a manufacturer fails to live up to this standard of care, consumers can get hurt as a result.

Pressure Cooker Settlements and Damages
In 2018, a Florida personal injury lawsuit resulted in a $27 million settlement for a pressure cooker that exploded and injured a 3-year old. The family of the toddler – who was severely burned – sued international kitchenware distributor Lifetime Brands Inc.
Another personal injury lawsuit settled in 2018 against the Maxi-Matic Elite Bistro 8-Quart Electric Pressure Cooker after it exploded and left the victim with second- and third-degree burns. The victim also sued Kohl’s as the distributor and claimed that:
- The product was defective, and
- The manufacturer failed to warn about the serious risks of the product

Pressure Cooker Lawsuits by Brand
ALDI Crofton Pressure Cooker Lawsuit
As the popularity of pressure cookers has increased, so have pressure cooker explosions and injuries. Even when used correctly, defects or design flaws can cause pressure cookers to malfunction, possibly injuring anyone nearby and damaging property, too.
ALDI Crofton pressure cookers have shown themselves to be no different. In 2017, ALDI recalled its Crofton Chef’s Collection 6L pressure cooker, a stainless steel model with product code #50073. The company discovered that the cooker’s lid-locking mechanism could be defective, allowing the lid to come off while cooking even when used as instructed.
Steam can cause severe scalding burns to anyone standing close by. The contents inside a pressure cooker can get to over 200 or 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Hot foods and liquids can be even more dangerous if they stick to your skin. Burn injuries can be painful, with long-term impacts on your physical, mental, and emotional health.
ALDI’s voluntary recall covered a total of 8,500 pressure cookers but only 25% were actually returned to the company. Which means that many of the cookers are still out in the world being used. Unfortunately, a voluntary recall is not enough to protect consumers.
You can tell if your ALDI cooker has been recalled by checking for the date “2017” embossed on the bottom of your Crofton Chef’s Collection 6L pressure cooker. ALDI has recommended that anyone who owns these cookers stop using them immediately.
In one explosion, six people suffered second- and third-degree burns when their ALDI pressure cooker malfunctioned, spraying steam and scalding hot food all over anyone standing in the room. One of the victims suffered 3rd-degree burns to over 35% of their body. This specific incident happened after the recall was announced, and it’s not the only one. In some cases, the victim’s burns were so severe that they had to be airlifted to the hospital.

Breville Fast Slow Cooker Lawsuit
In 2015, Breville recalled over 35,000 pressure cookers for burn risks and user injury. The company took this step after a woman was seriously injured with second-degree burns to 10% of her body, caused by a defect in labeling.
Recalled Breville pressure cookers include the 6-quart model BPR600XL with batch numbers 1235-1529, sold between September and October 2015 through retailers like Macy’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Sur La Table, Williams-Sonoma, and Crate & Barrel.
Based on Breville’s assembly instructions, users tend to insert the sealing gasket incorrectly. This causes a window for steam to escape when pressure builds up. As a result, the pressure cooker can explode, spewing hot contents up to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
Anyone standing nearby can be severely hurt by a pressure cooker explosion. Scalding hot contents can burn skin even over clothing. The force of a pressure cooker explosion could be so high that it could cause property damage to nearby appliances and fixtures.

Cook’s Essentials Pressure Cooker Lawsuit
Pressure cookers have seen a resurgence of popularity in American kitchens. Newly designed pressure cookers come with innovative safety mechanisms and extra features. But these convenient appliances have also proven to be dangerous, even when used properly.
Pressure cookers may suffer from bad design, manufacturing defects, faulty pressure valves, or unreliable components. Most pressure cookers reach temperatures between 200 and 250 degrees. When too much pressure builds in the cooker or the lid is not on properly, the resulting explosion of steam and hot food can cause devastating injuries to anyone nearby.
In fact, numerous lawsuits have been filed across the country by home cooks who have been burned or otherwise injured while using their pressure cookers.
Cook’s Essentials Pressure Cookers are available for sale on the QVC Shopping Channel. They come in many sizes with a variety of features including digital and stainless steel, but they all function by trapping heat to speed up the cooking process.

Sunbeam Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cooker Lawsuit
In January 2020, consumers filed a Florida class action lawsuit against Sunbeam Products Inc. and Jarden Consumer Solutions. The lawsuit claims that the company’s Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cookers exploded and caused injuries even when used as directed.
In fact, later that year in November 2020, Sunbeam Products recalled its Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cookers because of the following risk factors:
- The multi-cooker is able to pressurize when the lid is not fully locked,
- This can lead to the lid detaching suddenly while using the cooker, and
- The results pose a burn risk to users from exploding hot food and liquids.
Most pressure cookers have a safety mechanism to stop the lid from opening while the food inside the pot is under pressure. When a defect causes the safety mechanism to fail, the lid can open even when the cooker is pressurized.
That’s exactly what happened to one victim, who opened her Crock-Pot Express pressure cooker after the cooking process completed. She followed the manufacturer’s directions to release pressure from the steam release valve. She pressed the stop button and waited for the steam to end. The lid opened easily and exploded, scalding the victim’s torso and arm. She ended up suffering first- and second-degree burns, had to receive emergency treatment, and experienced long-term pain, suffering, and scarring. And she’s not the only one.
The Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cooker class-action lawsuit represents many such victims. It claims that the product is defective, allowing the built-up pressure to “burst and erupt” when the lid is opened. The lawsuit covers “all Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cooker models sold by Sunbeam, including without limitation, Model Number SCCPPC600-V1.”
The problem with Sunbeam’s Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cooker lies in a defective pressure release valve. Essentially, the pressure valve thinks that the pressure inside the pot has been released even when it hasn’t. A faulty gasket allows the lid to then be opened, spewing scalding hot contents with great force in every direction.
The lawsuit claims that the defendants:
- Should have known about the defect,
- Failed to take the proper precautions to make sure the product was safe before sale,
- Failed to warn consumers of the safety risks created by the defect,
- Concealed, misstated, or omitted information about the product’s safety, and
- Failed to recall the “dangerously defective” product despite the risks to users.
These are serious allegations. If you’ve been injured in a Crock-Pot Express pressure cooker explosion, you might have your own story similar to other victims.
According to the claims against Sunbeam, the Crock-Pot Express defect poses a “serious and immediate safety risk” to consumers. The product cannot be used without placing the user, their family, and anyone nearby at risk of injury. And because Sunbeam hasn’t issued a recall, users are unaware of the safety risks sitting on their kitchen counter.
This is despite the fact that the Express Pressure Cooker is advertised for its safety features. In fact, Sunbeam has touted the Crock-Pot Express as a “trusted” product with an air-tight lid lock that would give users “peace of mind” while cooking.
We trust that the products we bring into our homes and expose to our families are safe. If you had known the product was dangerous, you wouldn’t have bought it. Cuisinart Pressure Cooker Lawsuit
Cuisinart is known for its quality. The company advertises its pressure cooker as “safe, easy to use, and cooks up to 70% faster than conventional methods.” Except a number of lawsuits, including a class-action lawsuit filed in 2018, claim that Cuisinart’s CPC-600 series pressure cooker comes with multiple defects that put the user at risk.
Pressure cookers have come back into vogue recently, with new features like digital programs and extra safety measures. The high heat inside of a pressure cooker can help cook meals at a fraction of the time it would normally take, with minimal cleanup. But even with safety features in place to protect consumers, pressure cookers still pose a risk in thousands of homes.
In 2018, a South Dakota woman filed a lawsuit against Cuisinart after suffering burns when her pressure cooker exploded. The CPC-600 series pressure cooker exploded as she opened the lid, spraying scalding hot chili all over her face, neck, chest, and arms.
According to Cuisinart, the pressure cooker’s double lid-locking mechanism is supposed to stop it from opening if the contents are under pressure. This lawsuit claims that this mechanism is defective, allowing the lid to be opened even under pressure.
The lawsuit claims a second defect, where the Cuisinart pressure cooker pressurizes even when the lid isn’t fully secured. This defect causes the lid to pop off the base unexpectedly and explosively. This puts consumers at risk every day.
A recent Cuisinart pressure cooker class-action lawsuit claims that the defective lid-locking mechanism gives users a “false sense of safety,” because it doesn’t actually lock as advertised. The class-action lawsuit also claims that Cuisinart knew of this defect and has failed to take the proper steps to protect consumers. Cuisinart pressure cookers have not been recalled.

Maxi-Matic Elite Bistro Pressure Cooker Lawsuit
In 2015, a couple in California sued both Maxi-Matic USA and Kohl’s after their pressure cooker exploded and caused injuries. Maxi-Matic is a California small appliance company that sells Elite Bistro Pressure Cookers all over the United States. Kohl’s was the distributor. Other retailers include Amazon, Walmart, the Home Shopping Network, and Target.
In this case, the victim was using their Maxi-Matic pressure cooker to make chicken broth, when the lid exploded off the base, causing second- and third-degree burns.
Pressure cookers appeal to many because of their convenience and speed. But bad design or defects can cause these appliances to malfunction, even when used correctly. Reports on Exploding Maxi-Matic Elite Bistro Pressure Cookers
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) lists a number of reports of people who were burned or injured while using their Maxi-Matic Elite Bistro pressure cookers.
In many cases, victims suffered second- or third-degree burns and even had to be hospitalized. Unfortunately, Maxi-Matic Elite Bistro pressure cookers remain on the market, available online and in stores. That means thousands of consumers remain at risk of injury.
Sometimes, pressure cooker explosions are so destructive that they can even cause property damage to appliances and fixtures nearby.
Maxi-Matic Elite Bistro Pressure Cooker Fire Risk
Retailers who compete on price often pressure manufacturers into lowering their costs. As a result, manufacturers may move their production overseas to countries that don’t apply the same standards of safety as the U.S.
When consumer electronics manufacturers use cheap components, they may short out and overheat. The CPSC reports at least one incident where the Maxi-Matic Elite Bistro pressure cooker caught fire while it was in use.

Fagor Pressure Cooker Lawsuit
Fagor is a major European appliance and cookware company that also makes pressure cookers. Their products are sold in the United States through retailers like Amazon and Target.
The Fagor electric pressure cooker boasts a number of safety features, including:
- A self-locking lid that stops steam from leaking
- A spring-loaded pressure control valve
- A safety lock on the handle to prevent the lid from opening under pressure
- Two separate excess pressure release mechanisms
Despite all of these safety mechanisms, pressure cookers still pose a risk of burning and injury from explosions, rapidly expanding steam, and spraying hot contents. Ginny’s Pressure Cooker Lawsuit
Pressure cookers have recently surged in popularity because of their convenience, quick preparation, and easy cleanup. Millions of households in the United States have pressure cookers sitting on their kitchen counters. Many families use the devices on a regular basis.
Unfortunately, these everyday kitchen appliances can be dangerous to consumers, even when used correctly. Ginny’s Pressure Cooker products are no different.
Ginny’s electric 6-quart aluminum non-stick multi-cookers can brown, warm, steam, and pressure cook your food. They come with digital displays and countdown timers. The internal temperature of Ginny’s pressure cookers can reach anywhere from 140 to 350 degrees.
Pressure cookers work by trapping steam inside the pot to cook food faster than normal. Newer electric pressure cooker models come with a number of updated digital and safety features, including automatic locking lids and steam release valves.
Normally, steam releases slowly through the valve once the cooking process is over. When all the steam has released, the lid can open. But if the pressure indicator is inaccurate or the steam valve doesn’t work properly, the lid may come off before all the steam has escaped. All of that built-up pressure can cause a powerful explosion.
Even the best safety measures can backfire when products are defective. Another common problem can affect the rubber seal around the lid of the pressure cooker. Explosions can happen if the rubber is cracked or damaged enough to compromise the seal.

HSN Ultrex Pressure Cooker Lawsuit
In 2006, HSN – previously called The Home Shopping Network – issued a recall for its Ultrex Brand Pressure Cookers after receiving multiple reports of malfunctions. Nearly 1,500 pressure cookers were recalled from the market but some may still remain in use today.
The affected product is model number 11453, sold between June 2003 and October 2004 on the HSN television network, website, phone catalog, and Florida store.
The 8-quart HSN Ultrex Pressure Cooker has a defect that allows the lid to become unsealed while under pressure. As a result, the lid can burst open unexpectedly and with great force, sending hot, steaming food over anyone standing nearby.
Pressure cookers can heat their contents up to 250 degrees. When a pressure cooker explodes, it can cause property damage and severe injury, including second- and third-degree burns.

Instant Pot Pressure Cooker Lawsuit
Instant Pot pressure cookers have gained popularity on Amazon and other retailers because of their convenience and efficiency. They are easy to use with a variety of programmable options. The brand claims over 10 million units currently being used in households worldwide.
Instant Pots can heat up to an internal temperature of 250 degrees. They boast a number of safety features, including:
- A weighted pressure regulator on the lid to limit maximum pressure
- Instant Pot’s own patented sensor technology to regulate internal pressure
- Lid seal and leak detection, to make sure the lid is on properly before cooking starts
- Automatic lid lock while contents under pressure
- A shield over the steam vent to avoid blockages
- Automatic temperature control and high-temperature warning
- Automatic pressure control and excess pressure protection
Even with all of these safeguards, faulty manufacturing and assembly is still a possibility. Even the safest product can be dangerous if it doesn’t work as intended.
Instant Pot Recalls
In 2015, the U.S. Consumer Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled the Instant Pot Smart and the Instant Pot Smart 60 because of shock hazards and electrical burns.
In 2018, Instant Pot’s manufacturer recalled its popular Gen 65 8-in-1 Multicooker because of a defect that could cause the cooker to overheat, melt, and catch fire.
Instant Pot Pressure Cooker Lawsuits

Mirro Pressure Cooker Lawsuit

In 2016, a chef in Louisiana filed a lawsuit against NuWave LLC after he suffered severe painful burns when his Nutri-Pot Pressure Cooker exploded, spraying hot contents all over his body. Even though he followed proper instructions, the cooker’s safety mechanisms malfunctioned and exploded when he released the pressure valve.
His injuries led to costly medical bills and months of rehabilitation to treat. This is common after pressure cooker explosions because temperatures inside the pot can get as high as 250 degrees. When the lid pops off under those conditions, anyone standing nearby can get hurt.
This case goes to show that even professional cooks have gotten injured while using pressure cookers. The NuWave Nutri-Pot is sold across the country in major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Kohl’s, and Best Buy, putting countless consumers at risk.
The NuWave Nutri-Pot Pressure Cooker advertises safety features like a “Sure-Lock” system, which is supposed to make it impossible to open the lid until the pot is depressurized. Unfortunately, the product can still malfunction, causing burns.

Prestige Smartplus Pressure Cooker Lawsuit
The Prestige brand of pressure cookers come in various sizes meant for stovetop use. Some models feature inner and outer pressure lids, heat-resistant handles, and non-stick interiors.
Many home cooks use pressure cookers because they’re fast and convenient. You can have dinner ready in less than an hour with minimal prep and cleanup. Pressure cookers work by trapping steam and heat under the lid to speed up the cooking process.
That same convenient process puts millions of consumers at risk. Even with multiple safety features, pressure cookers can malfunction. An otherwise safe product may be manufactured with a defect. Unfortunately, when pressure cookers don’t work the way they’re supposed to, the consequences can be dire for anyone else in the room.
Prestige Smart Series Recalls
In 2007, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled the Prestige Smart five-piece stainless steel multi-cooker set. The set (model number 38270) included an 8-quart pressure pot and lid, steamer basket, and wire trivet.
A defect in the product allowed it to cook even if the lid wasn’t properly shut. The lid could then pop off violently during the cooking process. Temperatures inside a pressure cooker can reach 200 degrees Fahrenheit or more. So when a pressure cooker explodes, it can send boiling hot contents all over the room and anyone nearby.
Multiple users were burned and injured by Prestige Smart Series Pressure Cooker explosions. As a result, importer Manttra, Inc. recalled over 38,000 Prestige Smart multi-cooker units.
Even after this recall, Prestige claimed that their pressure cooker lids could not be opened until the pressure inside the pot had been properly released. But in 2012, the company carried out a voluntary recall of Smartplus stainless steel pressure cooker lids (model number 57050) in the U.K. because of a pressure regulator defect.

Tabletops Unlimited Phillippe Richard Pressure Cooker Lawsuit
In September 2019, an Ohio woman filed a lawsuit after her Phillippe Richard Pressure Cooker exploded in her home, causing her “serious and substantial burns.”
She was cooking dinner one night when the pressure cooker’s lid suddenly flew off the pot, blowing hot food all over her kitchen and her skin. She ended up with burns on 25% of her body and had to be hospitalized for two days in the burn unit.
According to her lawsuit, the Philippe Richard pressure cooker is defective and dangerous because it doesn’t stop the lid from popping off during regular use.
Phillippe Richard pressure cookers are made by TableTops Unlimited – a California-based manufacturer of non-electric household items. Their products are sold countrywide in major retailers like Kohl’s, Walmart, JCPenney, and Amazon.
Philippe Richard pressure cookers are manual stovetop pressure cookers – instead of plugging into an electric outlet, they go on the stove to heat up. A clamp secures the lid into a rubber ring around the top of the pot. This traps steam and builds pressure.
Inside the pot, temperatures can rise above 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
Defects and malfunctions with the Phillippe Richard pressure cooker have caused explosions resulting in spills, burns, and property damage. In some cases, the hot food inside the pressure cooker has spilled and ruined electrical stoves, causing property damage.
Phillippe Richard Pressure Cooker Lawsuits
In September 2019, Harlan Law filed a lawsuit against Tabletops Unlimited Pressure Cookers in California federal court. Our client’s Phillippe Richard pressure cooker exploded while she was using it, causing severe burn injuries to her body.

Tristar Power Pressure XL Cooker Lawsuit
The Power Pressure Cooker XL has been sold across the U.S. since 2014 in retailers like Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, and Walmart. The Power Pressure Cooker XL is manufactured by Tristar Products, which advertises it as an “amazing, one-button kitchen miracle.”
The Tristar website markets the Power Pressure Cooker XL as an affordable, healthy, and quick-cooking method for at-home cooks – up to 70% faster than other ways of cooking.
The Tristar also advertises its safety features, which include:
- Temperature controls and cutoff mechanisms
- Pressure monitor, safety and back-up pressure release valves
- A mechanism that stops the lid from opening until the pressure has been properly vented
And yet the Consumer Products Safety Commission’s (CPSC) product safety database has multiple reports of problems with the Tristar Power Pressure Cooker XL. In every case, one or more of the Tristar XL’s six listed safety features failed, building up steam until the lid exploded. All of the cases involved victims with extensive burns, even through their clothes.
One Texas woman sued Tristar after the Power Pressure Cooker XL exploded and sprayed her with hot beans – causing extreme burns all over her body that required her to be rushed to the hospital. Her treatment lasted 20 days and she continued to suffer pain and scarring afterward.
She isn’t the only one. Multiple consumers have had to go to the emergency room with second- and third-degree burns from malfunctions with the Tristar Power Pressure Cooker XL.
Tristar’s estimated yearly revenue is over $100 million. Although other products with similar safety issues have been recalled, consumers can still buy the Tristar Power Pressure Cooker XL. That means thousands of people remain at risk.
Tristar Power Pressure Cooker Class Action Lawsuit
The 2017 Tristar class action lawsuit claimed that the Tristar pressure cookers had a defect that made them unreasonably dangerous to consumers even when used properly.
Malfunctions include:
- Lids releasing steam suddenly when being opened
- Lids failing to stay in place while pressurizing
- Defective relief valves or gaskets that allow pressure to build even without a proper seal

Wolfgang Puck Pressure Cookers
In August 2017, a Texas woman filed a lawsuit claiming she suffered second- and third-degree burns after her Wolfgang Automatic Rapid Pressure Cooker exploded.
The incident happened after the cooking cycle ended and the pressure valve was supposedly safe to release. She is suing for negligence, strict product liability, and breach of warranty. She’s not the only one, either, with multiple reports of Wolfgang Puck Pressure Cooker malfunctions.
Wolfgang Puck’s pressure cookers have been popular with consumers across the United States, sold in department stores like Bloomingdale’s and appearing on the Home Shopping Network (HSN). Along with their efficiency, these devices boast of “built-in safety features,” like:
- A precision thermostat that regulates pressure inside the cooker
- A timer that indicates when the cooker has reached its optimal pressure
- Safety gauges that allow users to release steam manually or automatically
- A gauge that alerts the user when the cooker is depressurized and food is ready
Even with all of these safety features, problems can occur if the device itself is unreliable. Pressure cookers often heat their contents to high temperatures up to 250 degrees. Many people are drawn to the Wolfgang Puck name because of its reputation for quality in cooking. So it’s unfortunate when the product malfunctions and causes terrible injury instead.
